Nessebar splits into two parts. The old town sits on a rocky peninsula joined to the mainland by a narrow isthmus and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, packed with medieval churches like St. Stephen and the ruins of Christ Pantocrator, cobbled lanes and wooden Black Sea houses. Cars are heavily restricted inside, so most drivers drop you at the windmill by the causeway. New Nessebar, on the mainland, has the hotels, the South Beach and North Beach, and the small marina. Families and couples come mainly June to September for the beaches and the history; it borders Sunny Beach, so it's quieter than its neighbour but within walking or bus distance of the nightlife.

Burgas Airport sits just north of the city at Sarafovo, which puts you on the right side of town for Nessebar. The route follows the coastal road north past Pomorie, the salt-lake and spa town on its own spit of land, before continuing toward Sunny Beach. It's a short run of roughly 35 kilometres, usually around 35 to 45 minutes. The terrain is flat and open, with the lagoons and the Black Sea on the right for much of the way. The final approach into new Nessebar passes the resort hotels; if you're staying in the old town, the last stretch narrows at the causeway where vehicle access stops. In peak summer, traffic around Sunny Beach and Pomorie can slow the last few kilometres.

Tell your driver in advance whether you're staying in the old town or new town, because they are different drop-off points. Vehicles can't drive into the historic peninsula, so for old-town accommodation expect to be set down near the entrance and to walk in with your luggage over cobbles — soft-wheeled bags struggle here. Many new-town properties are apartment complexes with several buildings, so have the exact block name or address ready. If you land in high summer, an early or late transfer avoids the worst of the Pomorie–Sunny Beach traffic. The airport is small with a single terminal, so meeting your driver is straightforward. Carry some Bulgarian lev for beach loungers and small cafés, as card acceptance in the old town is inconsistent.
