It is a fast, mostly four-lane road through olive groves and low farmland, with the drystone walls typical of the peninsula. The journey covers roughly 90 kilometres and takes around 85 minutes in normal traffic. The only slow section is the final approach: to reach the old town you cross the bridge onto the island, where cars are heavily restricted and the lanes are narrow, so drivers usually drop passengers at the harbour edge rather than inside the historic centre.

If your accommodation is in the old town, note the address and the nearest gate: vehicles cannot circulate freely inside the walls in summer, and the driver will stop at the bridge or on Riviera Nazario Sauro. In July and August the SS101 and the roads into town back up in late afternoon as day-trippers leave the beaches, so an earlier pickup helps. Gallipoli is a common base for exploring the Ionian coast toward Santa Maria di Leuca or Porto Cesareo, so if you plan side trips confirm whether your transfer stops elsewhere first. Carry water and sun cover for the exposed final walk into the centre.
