Saint Emilion is a medieval hilltop village east of Libourne, surrounded by the vineyards that carry its name. Visitors come mainly for wine: to tour châteaux like Angélus, Ausone or Cheval Blanc (the last just outside the appellation), and to taste the Merlot-dominant reds in cellars along Rue Guadet. The village itself is compact and built on steep limestone, with the Monolithic Church carved into the rock and its bell tower giving views over the Dordogne plain. Most travellers are wine-focused day-trippers and couples, busiest from May to October and during the September harvest. The macarons de Saint-Émilion, made to a recipe dating from the 17th century, are sold in several shops around the main square. Streets are cobbled, steep and narrow, so comfortable shoes matter.

The airport sits west of Bordeaux, so the route crosses to the opposite side of the city. Drivers usually take the A630 ring road (rocade) around the north or east of Bordeaux, then join the A89 motorway towards Libourne and Périgueux. Traffic on the rocade is the main variable: it slows noticeably during morning and evening peaks, and the section near the Pont d'Aquitaine can back up. After leaving the motorway near Libourne, the last stretch runs on the D243 and smaller local roads through open vineyard country, gently rising towards the village. The total is roughly 50 kilometres and around 50 minutes in normal conditions. The final approach narrows as you reach Saint Emilion; large vehicles cannot enter the historic core, so drop-offs are usually at car parks on the edge of the village.

The historic centre is pedestrian and closed to most traffic, so ask your driver for a drop-off at the Parking des Cordeliers or the lower village car parks rather than expecting to reach your hotel door. Many châteaux require booking tours in advance, especially the classified estates, and some close on Sundays or over lunch — confirm times before you travel. If your plan is a day of tastings, arrange a return pickup rather than relying on finding transport in the village, where taxis are scarce. The tourist office on Place des Créneaux sells combined tickets for the Monolithic Church, which can only be seen on a guided visit. For onward travel, Libourne station is about ten minutes away by road and has frequent trains to Bordeaux Saint-Jean, a useful alternative if plans change.
