What draws visitors to Modena
Modena sits on the flat Emilia-Romagna plain and pulls two kinds of traveller: motoring fans and food travellers. Petrolheads head to the Enzo Ferrari Museum near the city centre and out to Maranello, about 18 km south, for the Ferrari Museum and factory. The historic core is compact and walkable: Piazza Grande, the Romanesque Duomo and the leaning Ghirlandina tower are UNESCO-listed. Mercato Albinelli is the covered food market for tortellini, Parmigiano and traditional balsamic vinegar from Spilamberto and Castelnuovo Rangone. Modena is also Pavarotti's home town, with his house-museum on the outskirts. Foodies book months ahead for Osteria Francescana. Spring and autumn suit sightseeing; summer gets humid on the plain.
The drive along the A1 to Modena
The route runs almost entirely on the A1 (Autostrada del Sole) heading northwest across the Po valley plain, so the terrain is flat farmland with no hills or bends to speak of. From Bologna Marconi you join the motorway quickly and leave it at Modena Nord or Modena Sud depending on your address. Expect roughly 40 to 50 minutes in normal traffic, longer in weekday rush hours when the Bologna ring road backs up. The final stretch into the centre uses ordinary city avenues; the medieval core around Piazza Grande has limited-traffic zones, so most drop-offs are at the edge of the pedestrian area. It is one of the more predictable transfers from this airport, with little that a passenger would find dramatic.
Practical tips for this transfer
If your hotel is inside Modena's ZTL (limited-traffic zone) around Via Emilia and Piazza Grande, tell the driver in advance: the car may need to stop just outside and you walk the last minute with luggage on the paving. For Maranello and the Ferrari Museum, it is often more efficient to be dropped there directly from the airport rather than doubling back from the city. Trains between Bologna and Modena are frequent but the airport itself has no station, so a private car door-to-door saves the shuttle-plus-train hop. Book ahead if you land late, as fewer taxis wait at Marconi in the evening. If you plan a balsamic-vinegar acetaia visit in the surrounding villages, a car makes those rural addresses far easier to reach.
