Marmaris sits at the head of a deep bay ringed by pine-covered hills. The core is the old town (Kaleiçi) below the 16th-century castle, with narrow lanes running down to Netsel Marina, one of Turkey's largest yacht harbours and the departure point for gulet cruises and day trips to Turunç, the Bozburun peninsula and the beaches near Sedir Island. Uzunyalı (Long Beach) stretches west along the palm-lined promenade, while Bar Street draws a younger summer crowd at night. Families and quieter travellers usually head 8 km further to İçmeler, a smaller resort bay with calmer water. Peak season runs June to September; sailors and hikers also come in spring and autumn when the Lycian-style coastal trails are cooler.

This is one of the longer transfers from Milas Airport, around 175 km and roughly two and a half to three hours depending on summer traffic. The route heads inland first, through Yatağan and up to Muğla, the provincial capital, on fast dual-carriageway. The scenery is dry and hilly rather than coastal for most of this stretch. The memorable part comes after Muğla: the road drops through the Sakar Pass in a series of tight switchbacks down to the Gökova gulf, with the sea appearing below through the pines. From there it winds along the coast into Marmaris. Passengers prone to motion sickness should be aware of the twisting descent and the final approach; a seat in the front and water help.

Because the journey is long, agree a pick-up point clearly if your hotel is in İçmeler, Turunç or Armutalan rather than central Marmaris — these add real driving time, and İçmeler is reached by a separate coastal road past the tunnel. Many seafront hotels sit on pedestrianised sections around the marina and old town, so the driver may drop you at the nearest vehicle access point rather than the door. Break up the drive: there are service stations and cafés around Muğla, useful with children. If you land late, note that the Sakar Pass is unlit in places and slower after dark. For return transfers, allow generous time for the mountain section and summer coach traffic on the single road out of town.
