What Vitoria-Gasteiz is known for
Vitoria-Gasteiz is the capital of the Basque Country and of Álava province, sitting on the flat Llanada Alavesa plateau at around 520 metres. Its almond-shaped medieval old town climbs to the Santa María Cathedral, still under long-term restoration and linked to Ken Follett's writing. Below it, Plaza de la Virgen Blanca and the arcaded Los Arquillos anchor the centre. The city runs on public administration, the Basque Parliament and its university, so many arrivals are officials, academics and business travellers. Others come for the Anillo Verde green belt and Salburua wetlands, the Artium art museum, or the summer jazz festival in July. It also works as a base for the Rioja Alavesa wine towns like Laguardia, half an hour south.
The drive from the airport on the AP-68
Bilbao Airport sits in Loiu, north of the city, so the route first drops south around Bilbao before joining the AP-68 motorway towards Zaragoza. This is a toll road for almost the whole journey. After Bilbao's outskirts the road climbs inland through wooded hills, passing the Altube area where you gain height onto the Álava plateau. It is dual carriageway the entire way, with no winding sections, and the terrain shifts from Cantabrian green to the drier, open farmland of the Llanada. Total distance is around 65 kilometres and the run usually takes about 50 to 55 minutes. The final approach into Vitoria is straightforward, though the pedestrianised medieval streets mean drop-offs happen at the edge of the old town rather than inside it.
Practical tips for this transfer
If your accommodation is inside the medieval quarter, tell the driver the nearest square or gate, since vehicles cannot enter the narrow streets around the cathedral and Los Arquillos; expect a short walk uphill with luggage. For hotels near the train station or Plaza de España, drop-off is easier and central. Weekday rush hour into Vitoria is light compared with Bilbao, but the AP-68 can slow near the Bilbao ring during morning commutes. If you plan onward trips to Rioja Alavesa or Laguardia, note there is no fast motorway south, so ask about a direct transfer rather than relying on infrequent buses. Winter mornings on the plateau can bring fog, so allow buffer time for early flights out of Bilbao.
