Santander divides between its working port city and El Sardinero, the beach district on the northern side. Families fill Playa del Sardinero and the smaller Playa de la Magdalena in July and August, while the Península de la Magdalena, with its early-1900s royal palace, is a year-round walk. Along the bay, Puerto Chico marina and the Paseo de Pereda lead to the Centro Botín, Renzo Piano's arts building over the water. The old town was rebuilt after the 1941 fire, so the streets around the cathedral and Mercado de la Esperanza feel modern. Surfers cross the bay by ferry to Somo and Pedreña, home to the golf club where Seve Ballesteros learned to play. Nightlife clusters around Calle Río de la Pila.

The route follows the A-8, the Cantabrian coast motorway, running west from Bilbao Airport for roughly 100 kilometres. It is dual carriageway the entire way, so the journey is around 75 minutes in normal traffic. After leaving the airport near Loiu you rejoin the motorway and cross from the Basque Country into Cantabria, passing the exits for Castro Urdiales, Laredo and Colindres. The road stays a few kilometres inland from the sea, cutting through green hills with a steady run of tunnels and viaducts rather than a winding coastal ledge. The final approach skirts the Bay of Santander before the city exits appear. If you are heading to El Sardinero rather than the centre, the last stretch climbs through residential streets away from the port.

Tell the driver whether you want the city centre or El Sardinero when you book: they are separated by a hill and knowing in advance avoids doubling back. If your final destination is the Brittany Ferries terminal for the Portsmouth or Plymouth crossing, note the address, as it sits on the Estación Marítima side of the port, not near the beaches. Old-town streets around Puerto Chico and the cathedral are narrow and often pedestrianised, so drop-offs may be at the nearest accessible corner. In summer the Sardinero area gets congested and street parking is scarce, which is another reason a door transfer beats self-drive. For a morning ferry or an early return flight, build in buffer time, as the A-8 can slow around Bilbao's ring at rush hour.
