The airport sits in Loiu, on high ground north of the city. The transfer runs south on the BI-631, dropping through Sondika and Derio before reaching the estuary basin where Bilbao lies. It's a short run, roughly 12 kilometres, usually 15 to 20 minutes outside rush hour. The route is dual carriageway and tunnels most of the way, so there's little to see until the city opens up along the river. If your hotel is in the Casco Viejo, the last stretch narrows into tight one-way streets where cars can't always reach the door. Morning and evening traffic on the approach into Abando and the Deusto bridges can add ten minutes, especially on weekday commutes.

Tell your driver the exact street and neighbourhood, not just "the old town": pedestrian zones in the Casco Viejo mean the closest legal drop-off may be a couple of minutes' walk from your door, often near the Ribera market or Plaza Unamuno. If you're staying in the Ensanche, ask to be left on Gran Vía or a cross street rather than a narrow parallel road. Bilbao weather is genuinely wet much of the year, so a short covered arrival matters when it's raining. For onward trips to Getxo, Portugalete or San Sebastián, confirm this at booking, as those routes leave the city on the A-8. Flights from Loiu are prone to fog delays in winter, so keep some buffer if you have a connection.
