Gallipoli sits on the Ionian side of the Salento peninsula, split between a modern town on the mainland and an old town built on a limestone island linked by a stone bridge. Inside the walls you'll find the Baroque Cathedral of Sant'Agata, the Greek Fountain and the Angevin castle guarding the harbour, where the fishing fleet still lands its catch each morning. Summer visitors come mainly for the sand: Baia Verde, Punta della Suina and Lido San Giovanni to the south, plus the sheltered Spiaggia della Purità right below the old town. Baia Verde is also the nightlife hub, with beach clubs like Praja drawing a younger July and August crowd. Families and couples tend to prefer late spring and September, when the beaches and narrow streets are far calmer.

The route runs the length of the Salento, so expect roughly two and a half hours in the car. From Bari airport the driver joins the SS16/SS613 corridor south towards Brindisi and Lecce, dual carriageway for most of the way through flat inland country covered in olive groves and low stone walls. At Lecce you switch onto the SS101 superstrada, a fast straight run west across the peninsula to Gallipoli. There are no mountains and little bends until the final approach into town. Once you reach the old town, streets narrow sharply and much of the island is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL), so drivers usually set down at the bridge or the nearest permitted point rather than at your door. Traffic on the SS101 builds noticeably on July and August weekends.
