What Brindisi offers arriving travellers
Brindisi is a working port at the historic end of the Roman Via Appia, marked by the surviving Roman column above the steps that drop to the Lungomare Regina Margherita. Most passengers here are catching ferries to Greece or Albania, or exploring the Salento on the way south. The old centre is compact: Piazza Duomo, the Provincial Archaeological Museum Ribezzo, the Swabian Castle by the inner harbour, and the Monument to the Italian Sailor across the water. Santa Maria del Casale, a Romanesque-Gothic church, sits near the airport road on the city's northern edge. Torre Guaceto nature reserve and its beaches lie a short drive north. Day-trippers often base here to reach Ostuni, Cisternino and Mesagne.
The drive south along the SS16 and SS379
The route leaves Bari Karol Wojtyła Airport and joins the SS16 Adriatica dual carriageway heading south, then continues onto the SS379 coastal expressway toward Brindisi. It's roughly 120 kilometres and usually takes about an hour and a half. The terrain is flat coastal plain the whole way — olive groves, low stone walls and occasional glimpses of the Adriatic rather than any climbing or hairpins. You pass the exits for Mola di Bari, Polignano a Mare, Monopoli and Fasano before the road bends inland past Ostuni. Traffic is generally light outside summer weekends; in July and August the stretch near Fasano and the coastal resorts can slow considerably as beach traffic builds through the morning.
Practical tips for this airport-to-port route
If you're connecting to a ferry, name your operator when booking: Grimaldi and other lines use the Costa Morena terminal outside the centre, reached via a separate port road, not the old-town waterfront where cruise tenders and smaller boats dock. Check-in for Greece and Albania ferries closes well ahead of departure, so allow buffer time for the drive. For hotels inside the historic core near Piazza Duomo, expect narrow one-way streets with limited vehicle access — your driver may set you down at the nearest square. Brindisi's own airport (Papola Casale) sits just north of the city, but many long-haul and low-cost connections still route through Bari, which is why this transfer is common. Carry water in summer; the SS379 has few service stops.
