What Roses offers at the north end of the Costa Brava
Roses sits at the northern curve of its own broad bay, at the foot of the Cap de Creus headland. The town beach, Platja de la Punta, runs beside the marina, while quieter coves like Canyelles Petites, La Almadrava and Cala Montjoi lie south along a rockier stretch reached by winding roads. Above the harbour stands the Ciutadella, a walled site with Greek, Roman and medieval remains, and the ruined Castell de la Trinitat guards the bay's eastern point. Families fill the sandy beaches and the Santa Margarida canal district in July and August; hikers and divers come for Cap de Creus natural park in spring and autumn. Neighbouring Empuriabrava, with its residential canals and skydiving centre, is a short drive west.
The drive north up the AP-7 to the Empordà plain
The route leaves Barcelona-El Prat on the C-32 and B-23 to join the AP-7 motorway heading north. This is fast, mostly flat driving past Girona, with the Pyrenees appearing on the horizon as you approach the Alt Empordà. You leave the motorway near Figueres and take the C-260 east across open farmland, passing Castelló d'Empúries and skirting Empuriabrava before the bay opens up ahead. Total time is usually around an hour and three-quarters, longer on summer weekends when the C-260 backs up near Empuriabrava and the Roses seafront. The final approach is straightforward, though the coastal road south of town towards Cala Montjoi turns narrow and steep if your accommodation is out on that stretch.
Practical tips for arriving in Roses
If you are staying in the Santa Margarida area, give the exact street rather than just the resort name: it is a grid of canals and short cul-de-sacs where similar addresses are easy to confuse, and the same applies in Empuriabrava next door. For apartments in the old town near the harbour, be aware that streets behind the seafront are narrow and partly pedestrianised, so the drop-off may be a short walk from the door. The Tramuntana wind blows hard here, especially in winter and spring, which can slow the final coastal stretch. If you plan day trips to Cadaqués or the El Bulli area at Cala Montjoi, note those roads are single-lane and slow, so allow extra time rather than assuming short distances mean quick drives.
