Cala Montgó is a sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay just south of L'Escala, on the southern edge of the Montgrí massif in the Baix Empordà. The route leaves Barcelona-El Prat on the ring roads and joins the AP-7 motorway heading north past Girona. This is fast, straightforward driving for most of the journey, with the Montseny and later the Gavarres hills off to the west. You leave the motorway around the L'Escala exit (near Orriols/Bàscara) and switch to the GI-623 through flat Empordà farmland, passing Viladamat and Torroella-area junctions before reaching L'Escala itself. The final stretch from L'Escala down to Cala Montgó is short but narrow and winding, climbing over a low wooded rise before dropping into the cove, so the last few minutes feel very different from the open motorway. Total road distance is roughly 150 km and the trip normally takes around an hour and three quarters.

Give your driver the specific villa or apartment name and street, not just "Cala Montgó": the bay is a spread of residential lanes on the hillsides above the beach, and several are steep, one-way or dead-end, so the exact address saves time on arrival. In peak summer the L'Escala approach and the beach car park fill up, so allow extra minutes on weekend changeover days. If you are arriving with beach gear and small children, note there are supermarkets in L'Escala rather than at the cove itself, so a quick stop there is worth arranging in advance. For a day trip, ask to be dropped at Empúries or L'Escala's old town and walk the coastal path down to Cala Montgó. Book the return with a little buffer, as the winding local road slows things down.
