What Blanes is and who comes here
Blanes marks the southern end of the Costa Brava, with the Sa Palomera rock splitting its seafront into the long, sandy S'Abanell beach and the town beach along Passeig de Mar. Families fill the apartments near S'Abanell in July and August, while the quieter cove of Cala de Sant Francesc, backed by pine woods, draws walkers. Above the fishing port sits the Marimurtra botanical garden, with clifftop paths over the water. The compact old town has a Saturday market and the ruins of Sant Joan castle on the hill behind it. The Santa Anna festival in late July brings the well-known international fireworks competition fired from Sa Palomera. Blanes also works as a base for reaching Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar nearby.
The drive up the coast from El Prat
The route leaves Barcelona-El Prat on the ring roads around the city, then follows the AP-7 motorway or the C-32 coastal toll road north towards Girona. It is fast, wide road almost the whole way, with the last stretch on the C-32 running close to the Maresme coast before you turn off near Blanes and Lloret. Expect roughly 90 kilometres and around an hour in normal traffic. The final approach into Blanes is on ordinary town roads rather than mountain switchbacks, so it is an easy arrival. The main slow points are the Barcelona exits and, in summer, weekend build-up near the Lloret and Blanes junctions on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons when day-trippers and holidaymakers are moving.

Practical tips for arriving in Blanes
Tell the driver your exact street and beach zone: the S'Abanell strip runs a long way south, and an apartment there is a very different drop-off from the old town or the marina end near the port. Streets in the old core and around the church are narrow and partly one-way, so for those a nearby square or the Passeig de Mar is often the practical stopping point. If you are heading to the Marimurtra garden or Cala de Sant Francesc, note these sit up on the headland with limited parking, and the coast path between them is walked, not driven. A private transfer avoids the change at Barcelona Sants for the regional train, which terminates at Blanes station about two kilometres inland from the beach.
