What Vouliagmeni is known for
Vouliagmeni sits on the Athenian Riviera south of the city, on a peninsula of pine-covered headlands and sheltered coves. The best-known spots are Lake Vouliagmeni, a warm brackish lake fed by underground springs where people swim year-round, and Astir Beach, an organised beach beside the Four Seasons Astir Palace. Kavouri and the smaller coves toward Cape Vouliagmeni draw families and swimmers, while the marina and seafront tavernas fill in summer evenings. It's a wealthy residential area, quieter than neighbouring Glyfada, and popular with visitors who want the coast without staying in central Athens. Divani Apollon Palace and several boutique hotels line the shore. Spring and autumn suit walkers exploring the headland trails; July and August bring beach crowds.
The drive from the airport to the coast
Athens International Airport sits inland at Spata, on the eastern side of Attica, so the route crosses to the opposite coast. Drivers usually take Attiki Odos west, then turn south toward Vari and Varkiza on the Vari–Koropi road, descending through low hills to meet the coast. The final stretch follows Vouliagmenis Avenue and the shoreline into town. It's mostly fast dual-carriageway and toll motorway, with the last few kilometres slowing as the road winds along the sea past Varkiza and the headland. Expect roughly 30 to 45 minutes outside rush hour. An alternative runs along the full coastal road through Glyfada and Voula, which is slower but hugs the water the whole way. Traffic on the coastal stretch builds on summer weekends.
Practical tips for this transfer
Give your driver the exact hotel or villa name, since Vouliagmeni's seafront properties spread along the coast road with several separate entrances, and Astir Palace in particular has multiple gates. If you're heading to Astir Beach or the lake, note that these are distinct points several minutes apart, so specify which. In summer, the coastal approach through Glyfada and Voula can slow noticeably on weekend afternoons; the Vari–Koropi route via Attiki Odos usually avoids the worst of it, though it uses tolls. Many residential streets on the headland are steep and narrow, so a larger vehicle may need to drop you slightly uphill. If you plan day trips, Cape Sounion and its temple lie further south along the same coast, making Vouliagmeni a workable base for exploring the Riviera.
