What Anavyssos is known for
Anavyssos sits on the southwest coast of Attica, past Saronida and Lagonisi and before Cape Sounion. Its long sandy bay catches steady afternoon wind, which is why windsurfers and kitesurfers gather at spots like Mavro Lithari and Eden Beach. Behind the shore lies the Anavyssos salt lake (Alyki), a shallow lagoon ringed by low hills. The town itself is low-key: fish tavernas around the small harbour, weekend houses, and a summer crowd of Athenian families rather than package tourists. The Kouros of Anavyssos, an archaic statue, was unearthed here. Most visitors come between May and September for the beaches and the seafood, and many continue the short drive to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion for sunset.
The drive from the airport to the coast
From Athens Airport at Spata the route heads south rather than toward the city. Drivers usually take the Markopoulo road, pass the Markopoulo area, then turn southwest through Kalyvia Thorikou and drop down to the coast at Anavyssos. It is roughly 42 kilometres and, outside peak beach traffic, about 45 minutes. The terrain is inland and rolling for most of the way — vineyards, scrub and open country — before the road descends toward the bay and you get your first sight of the sea. The final approach is straightforward, not the tight hairpins you find further along the Sounion cliff road. Summer weekends can slow the last stretch as day-trippers head for the same beaches, so allow extra time on Friday evenings and Sunday returns.
Practical tips for this route
Anavyssos spreads along the coast with houses set on hillside lanes above the main road, so give your driver the exact villa name, street or beach club rather than just "Anavyssos" — GPS pins in this area are often vague and some side streets are steep and unpaved. If you are staying in a rental with no street number, share a map location in advance. There is no motorway toll on this southbound route, unlike the drive into central Athens. Supermarkets in Anavyssos and neighbouring Saronida close early and options thin out at night, so if you arrive on a late flight, ask to stop for supplies in Markopoulo or Kalyvia on the way. For Sounion sunset trips, book the return leg, as taxis are scarce there after dark.
