Arriving in Brussels: neighbourhoods and landmarks
Brussels layers a medieval core over a working capital. The Grand-Place, with its guildhalls and the Town Hall spire, sits at the centre of the pedestrian old town, a short walk from the Manneken Pis and the covered Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert. North of there the Sablon district is known for antique dealers and chocolatiers, while the Marolles hosts the daily flea market on Place du Jeu de Balle. Business travellers head for the EU Quarter around Schuman, Place du Luxembourg and the Berlaymont, or to Avenue Louise for offices and hotels. Families often make for the Atomium and Mini-Europe in Laeken. Trains from Bruxelles-Midi connect Eurostar and Thalys services, so many arrivals continue onward from there.
The drive south on the E19 motorway
Antwerp International Airport sits in Deurne, east of the city, so the driver first crosses the Antwerp ring before joining the A1/E19 motorway that runs almost straight south to Brussels. The terrain is flat Flemish farmland and commuter towns — Mechelen and Zaventem lie off to the side — with the road wide and easy for most of the way. Expect roughly 50 kilometres and around an hour door to door, though it stretches longer in weekday rush hours when traffic backs up on the approach to the Brussels ring (R0). The final stretch into the city centre means slower boulevards and one-way systems; the old-town streets around the Grand-Place are narrow and partly pedestrianised, so drop-offs are often at the edge.
Practical notes for this transfer
Antwerp International Airport is small and handles mostly regional and business flights, so arrivals clear quickly and a pre-booked car is faster than waiting for onward public transport. If your final destination is inside Brussels' Low Emission Zone, which covers the whole capital region, note that a professional operator's vehicle will already be registered — worth confirming if you were considering driving yourself. For the EU Quarter, give the driver the specific institution or hotel, as Schuman roundabout access changes with security events. If you are catching an onward train, Bruxelles-Midi is the international hub for Eurostar and Thalys; allow extra buffer at rush hour. Hotels near the Grand-Place usually require drop-off on nearby streets such as Boulevard Anspach rather than at the door.
