What draws visitors to Brugge
Brugge's medieval centre is compact and largely car-free, so most guests want to be dropped as close as possible to the Markt, the Belfort tower or the Burg square. Canal boats leave from landing stages near Rozenhoedkaai and the Dijver, and the Begijnhof and Minnewater lake sit at the quiet southern edge. Day-trippers come year-round for the chocolate shops, the Groeningemuseum and the climb up the Belfry; couples and older travellers fill the small hotels along Katelijnestraat and near 't Zand. In December the Christmas market on the Markt pulls big crowds. If your accommodation is inside the ring canal, expect cobbled, narrow lanes where vehicles move slowly.
The drive from Antwerp Airport across Flanders
Antwerp International Airport sits in the Deurne district, close to the city's ring road. From there the route joins the R1 ring and heads west and south onto the E17 motorway towards Gent, then transfers to the E40 for the final run west to Brugge. It is flat, inland Flemish countryside the whole way — fields, industrial edges around Gent, and motorway signage in Dutch. The journey is around 100 kilometres and normally takes about 75 to 90 minutes. The slow parts are predictable: the Antwerp ring itself and the approach to Gent can back up at rush hour. Once you leave the E40 at the Brugge exits, the final stretch narrows quickly as you reach the old-town streets.
Practical tips for arriving in Brugge
Tell your driver the exact street and hotel name, because many central addresses lie inside a restricted traffic zone and cannot be reached by the shortest route. Cars often stop at the nearest permitted point — near 't Zand, Katelijnestraat or the station — and you walk the last stretch over cobbles, so pack luggage you can wheel or carry. If you're heading to the coast afterwards (Zeebrugge or Knokke), Brugge is the natural base, and the train station is a short ride south of the centre. For a late arrival, confirm your hotel's check-in hours, as smaller guesthouses inside the ring may not staff a night desk. Rush-hour departures from Antwerp are worth avoiding when your schedule allows.
