San José as a base for Cabo de Gata
San José is the main village inside the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, a low-rise settlement built around a small bay and a marina used by local boats and divers. Most visitors come for the volcanic-rock beaches nearby: Playa de los Genoveses and Playa de Mónsul, both a short drive south on unpaved park tracks, plus the town beach itself. Hikers and snorkellers dominate spring and autumn, when the heat is bearable and the park is quieter; families and Spanish holidaymakers fill it in July and August. The centre is compact, with a handful of seafood restaurants along Calle Correo and the seafront. It stays low-key compared with the resorts west of Almería, and there are no large hotel chains.
The drive from the airport into the park
The airport sits just east of Almería city, which puts San José on the near side for arrivals. The route heads east past El Alquián and Retamar, then turns inland and south towards Níjar's coastal district, following the AL-3115 through open scrubland and small farming hamlets like Pujaire and Ruescas before reaching San José. There is no motorway for most of the trip; expect single-carriageway roads across dry, semi-desert terrain with the Sierra del Cabo de Gata on your right. The final stretch descends gently into the village. It is a short transfer, usually around three-quarters of an hour, but the landscape is bare and there are few services once you leave the coast road, so it feels remote quickly.
Practical points for arriving in San José
San José's streets near the marina and seafront are narrow and get congested in high summer, so a door-to-door transfer saves you circling for the limited parking. If your accommodation is up one of the steep side lanes, confirm the exact address, as some are pedestrianised. Bring supplies: there is a supermarket in the village but options thin out, and the beaches at Genoveses and Mónsul have no bars, shade or facilities, so water and food must come with you. In peak season the road down to those beaches is closed to cars beyond a paid car park, with a shuttle bus running instead. Sunset dinners fill up fast in August, so book ahead. Fuel and cash machines are limited, so sort both in Almería before heading out.
