Tanaunella is a coastal frazione of Budoni on Sardinia's northeast shore, built up around wide, shallow-shelving sandy beaches that suit families with young children. The Spiaggia di Tanaunella runs into Agrustos, with Porto Ottiolu and its marina a short way north and Cala di Budoni to the south. The area fills mainly in July and August, when Italian families and campers arrive; many stay in villa complexes and residences rather than hotels. It is quieter and less exclusive than nearby San Teodoro, which draws a younger crowd to La Cinta beach and its nightlife. For a break from the sand, Berchida beach and the granite hills behind the coast are close by. Outside high summer it is a calm, residential place.

This is a long crossing from one side of the island to the other. From Alghero-Fertilia the route heads to Sassari, then joins the Sassari–Olbia dual carriageway (SS729), the fastest part of the trip, running through rolling inland countryside and cork-oak land. Near Olbia the road connects to the SS125 Orientale Sarda heading south toward San Teodoro and Budoni. The final stretch is coastal but not mountainous, passing turnoffs for the various beach areas. Expect roughly two and a half hours in normal conditions. The last few kilometres involve leaving the main road for local lanes into Tanaunella and the residence complexes, which can be narrow and poorly signposted, especially the seasonal holiday developments set back among pines and low scrub.

Because the journey is long and mostly inland, plan it as a two-and-a-half-hour trip and factor in summer traffic near Olbia and San Teodoro, where the SS125 slows in July and August. If you're arriving late, note that most of Tanaunella's residences and villas are self-catering, so shop for basics before or ask the driver about the supermarkets in Budoni village. Give an exact residence or complex name and, if possible, a pin location: many holiday developments share entrances off the same lane and satnav often stops at the main road. For beach days, Porto Ottiolu marina and the Budoni seafront have restaurants; Olbia airport is far closer for your return, so consider that when booking your outbound flight.
