What Porto Cervo is and who goes there
Porto Cervo is the centre of the Costa Smeralda, the coastline Prince Aga Khan developed from the 1960s. The village is built around Marina di Porto Cervo and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, with the Piazzetta and the Sottopiazza lined with boutiques and the Stella Maris church above. Golfers head for the Pevero Golf Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones. Beaches nearby include Spiaggia del Principe, Liscia Ruja, Romazzino, Capriccioli and Cala Granu. The season is short and concentrated: July and August bring yacht crowds and nightlife at spots like the Billionaire, while May, June and September suit families and swimmers wanting quieter beaches. Baja Sardinia, Porto Rotondo and Arzachena are all close by.
The drive across northern Sardinia
This is a cross-island journey from the northwest coast to the northeast, so expect around two and a quarter hours. The route leaves Alghero and Fertilia heading inland toward Sassari, then picks up the four-lane Sassari–Olbia corridor (SS729), which carries most of the distance at a steady pace through rolling inland countryside. Near Olbia the road turns north on the SS125 toward Arzachena, where the landscape becomes greener and more granite-strewn. The final stretch on the SP59 into Porto Cervo is winding, with the Costa Smeralda's low hills and scattered resort entrances. Porto Cervo itself is a spread-out resort area rather than a single centre, so hotels like Cala di Volpe, Romazzino and Pitrizza each have their own approach road off the main loop.
Practical advice for this transfer
Because Porto Cervo is spread over several bays, tell us the exact hotel, villa or beach name when booking — Cala di Volpe and Pitrizza are a few kilometres apart, and getting the wrong entrance costs time on narrow resort roads. In July and August the marina and Piazzetta area become pedestrian-heavy in the evenings, so drop-offs are smoother if arranged for daytime. Many travellers to Porto Cervo also fly into Olbia Costa Smeralda, which is far closer; if you are landing at Alghero, confirm the longer journey time so onward dinner or ferry plans allow for it. There are few large supermarkets in the resort itself — stock up in Arzachena on the way if you have a villa booking, since prices and choice near the marina are limited.
