What Taghazout is known for
Taghazout is a small fishing-turned-surf village on the Atlantic coast north of Agadir. It draws surfers to point breaks like Anchor Point, Killer Point, La Source, Panorama and Hash Point, which work best from autumn through spring when Atlantic swells are consistent. The centre is a compact grid of low white and blue houses running down to the beach, with surf shops, rooftop cafés and yoga and surf camps. Just south, the newer Taghazout Bay development adds hotels and a golf course, while nearby Tamraght and Aourir (the "banana village") host more budget guesthouses. Many visitors use Taghazout as a base for day trips inland to Paradise Valley, a palm-lined gorge with natural pools in the Anti-Atlas foothills.
The drive north along the coast
Al Massira Airport sits inland, southeast of Agadir, so the transfer first runs on the N1 dual carriageway across dry, open plains toward the city. Rather than entering central Agadir, the route swings onto the coastal road heading north toward Essaouira, then follows the shoreline through Aourir and Tamraght before reaching Taghazout. The total is roughly 48 km and usually takes about 55 minutes. The first half is fast and straight; the coastal stretch is slower, two-lane and winding in places, with the Atlantic on your left and argan-covered hills on your right. Expect some traffic through Aourir's roadside market and speed bumps as you pass through the smaller villages. The final approach into Taghazout narrows into steep village lanes.
Practical tips for this route
Many Taghazout guesthouses and surf camps sit on lanes too narrow or steep for a car to reach the door, so share a clear location pin and the name of the nearest landmark or main road when you book; your driver may drop you at the closest accessible point and help with the short walk. If you're carrying board bags, mention this in advance so a suitable vehicle is assigned. There are no reliable ATMs at the airport late at night, and Taghazout's few machines can run empty, so withdraw dirhams before leaving Agadir. The coastal road has little lighting after dark, and Paradise Valley excursions are a separate trip inland, not on the way. For early flights out, allow extra time, as the village exit and Aourir stretch slow down in morning traffic.
